Many users had a rude shock a few hours ago when they tried accessing the Jeff Bezos’ newly acquired Washington Post when they were redirected to a Syrian Electronic Army hacker site.
The compromise was for about 30 minutes this morning, as redirected users were led to the site maintained by a group that backs the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The hackers gained access via phishing attempts.
This is the fourth major news organisation targeted by the Syrian Electronic Army this year. Earlier networks included the Associated Press’ Twitter account, where the Message sent through that account was that the White House had been bombed; the Financial Times, and ITV.
Following the $250 million sale, Washington Post Co. still retains other assets like its Kaplan Education business. It plans to change its name after the sale of the newspaper arm to Bezos.
