Executive Interview: with Xinlin Wang – Following the Heart to Art

This post follows Xinlin Wang as she ventures into the world of design and art. She is currently working as a caricature artist after leaving her post as an editor. In her spare time, she swims, plays the piano and reads.

BLM: What made you decide to venture into designing of shoes?

X: It wasn’t really a conscious decision. Designing shoes were all the rage back then and over time I caught on to it. Along the way, I became fascinated with the concept of translating art pieces into everyday, wearable items. I see myself as an illustrator than a shoe designer though.

BLM: Who or what are your inspirations? Do you follow particular designers in the industry? How have their works inspired you?

X: There are too many to name. I am first and foremost inspired by people with strong views towards life. People who are moved by things in ways only they can understand. I may not always agree with them, but I am humbled by their spirited-ness and energy.

BLM: Where do you see yourself and your products 5 years from now?

X: I’d like for my artworks to conscientiously be extensions of my beliefs and world views. So wherever I am as a person 5 years later is what my creative works will be too.

BLM:What advice would you give to executives who wish to step out of their comfort zones?

X: I confess I find this question a bit baffling, as it implies that the default preference of a person is to remain in a constant unchanging role. To me, human nature isn’t as static or rigid as the labels that have been created for them, by themselves or society, or by their occupational titles. Let’s say, someone wants to do something really badly – be it travel, write a book, learning to dance – he either does it, or he doesn’t. In my opinion, there is no middle ground. When the time is right, you will move your own mountains.
