Status judgments are affected not just by your current position but also your momentum in ascension. In fact, a higher weightage on status is placed on ascension, ceteris paribus. This means that for an individual who has been promoted up to a certain rank as compared to someone else demoted to the same rank level, the person who was promoted would be perceived as of a higher status.
