Just today, China slapped a $75 billion tariff in retaliation to the US. As an affront and response to President Trump’s measures, the Chinese state upped its ante on the US, sparking a fresh and swift reply from Trump who took on the step to get US companies to cut business ties with China. Over the last two decades, China has experienced phenomenal growth. But there are recent signs that are showing the miracle economic machinery losing its steam. Internally, China has to deal with increasingly worsening structural problems and an uncertain economic system. Book Review on “A New Economic Growth Engine for China”

I recently picked up a copy of this book. It details how China is at the turning point of its development where its near double-digit growth is now threatened by challenges that the waking dragon has to overcome or risk being “caught in the middle-income trap and be unable to become a modern country”.
