In her new book “Surviving Separation” (published by Trafford Publishing), author Shauna Stebler – a 2013 Illinois Library Association Book Show author – shares with readers her experiences on the emotional roller coaster of having a separation from a spouse before, during and after a divorce.
After eight years of marriage, my husband told me that he didn’t know if he wanted to be married anymore,” Stebler says. “We separated shortly after that and I was devastated. I spent two years in limbo status waiting for him to make a decision about whether or not we were going to work on our marriage or get divorced. Those two years were hell, but I learned a lot about myself and what God wanted me to be.
An excerpt from “Surviving Separation:
“Separation from a spouse is one of the most difficult things that we go through in life. It’s heart wrenching and emotionally draining. Some days are so bad that you actually look forward to bedtime, just so the day will be over because maybe, just maybe, tomorrow will be better. ‘Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning’, Psalm 30:5. We pray for a better morning because today was too much to bear.”
Stebler’s hope is that her experiences can save others from going through the long period of anguish she suffered. “I want them to know that they’re not alone. I want them to know what to expect and know where they can turn to for support and encouragement,” she says. “I want them to seek God with all their hearts and find a deeper and stronger faith. I want them to not just survive, but to find the good that’s going to come out of it so they can thrive.”
Shauna Stebler is a Christian. She has a 7-year-old son. Originally from Pittsburgh, Stebler has lived in Oklahoma for the past 10 years. Divorced, for the last two and a half years, she has led a support group for people going through separation and divorce. Currently finishing up her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, Stebler spent almost eight years in the Air Force and is a disabled veteran.
